Compact fluorescent light bulbs are a great alternative to incandescents in the home. CFLs last longer than incandescents, and use less energy to produce the same amount of light. On average, they last 10 times longer than an incandescent and can save a homeowner more than $30 on the energy bill over the life of the bulb

The US Environmental Protection Agency has collected data that states that homes and other residences use 33% of all electricity generated in the United States. This means that cutting down on energy use in your home can have a big positive impact on your environmental footprint. CFLs are a great way to help reduce your energy use at home.

There are some drawbacks to CFLs though. They contain mercury. This means that instead of throwing them in the regular garbage it is best to recycle them at a local retailer that accepts CFLs, or to save them for a household hazardous waste collection in your community.

CFLs are very safe, and contain less than 4 milligrams of mercury on average. This is only slightly more that a household thermometer.

Another minor drawback of CFLs is that some brands of bulbs may have a shorter lifespan or emit less light when situated upside down. To prevent this from happening, make sure to thoroughly read the packaging on any bulb you purchase. Those with issues will state so on the box.

CFLs fit into most light fixtures with no problems and can be found at major retail stores and smaller shops that sell light bulbs.
