There are many things you can do around the house to improve the condition and value. Patching holes and repairing simple plumbing items can add years to your home. Repairing damaged or rotted exterior siding and trim can add curb appeal to your home.

In the interior of your home you can repair holes in drywall with little effort. Small holes can be filled with spackle and larger holes may need mesh and some joint compound. Tape the larger hole with mesh tape in both directions. Put a thin coat of compound over it squeezing it through the mesh. Sand in between each coat and use at least three coats of compound. In the interior you can also tighten or replace trim that is damaged. Doors are a popular item that need adjusting from time to time. Loose screws in hinges are one of the commonest problems with doors. Locksets are another problem area that could just need some lubricant or may need replaced. New ones come with easy to follow instructions.

On the exterior rotted and damaged wood is a factor you can deal with. When replacing items prefinish them and you will not get paint on parts you do not want to. Carefully remove damaged items with a flat bar. Use a thin board to pry on so you do not leave unsightly marks on other areas. Vinyl siding and metal are easily removed with a zip tool. It makes replacing damaged siding easy. Rotted facia boards need replacing before they cause more damage.

Fixing leaks in plumbing parts are easier then you think. Changing washers and seals can be done in a few minutes. Electrical fixtures can be changed easily too. Turn the breaker off before doing any electrical repair.
